Internet Tip Of The Day

Capture and share your desktop

In theory, the Print Screen button is great. You can use it to take a picture of your computer screen.
In practice, though, the Print Screen button leaves a lot to be desired. Many people ask me how it works. I gave up on the Print Screen button long ago. It is just too cumbersome—and you don’t get much control over your screen shots.
I use special software to take screen shots. Maybe you’d like software for this, too. In that case, download Jing. Jing will help you get still shots and videos from your computer screen. And, unlike Print Screen, Jing is easy to use. Jing sits on the edge of your computer desktop until you need to use it. Just click the Capture button and drag your mouse over the part of your screen you’d like to capture. Jing also lets you make notes on your screen captures. Want to share them with friends and family? You can do that, too. Jing will even give you Web space to store the captures.

You’ll need the .NET 3.0 Framework to run Jing. You’ll be prompted to download it if it isn’t on your machine. It's free from Microsoft.

Note: AVG may warn that Jing contains a Trojan. This is not the case. Jing is made by TechSmith, a legitimate company that makes the popular SnagIt and Camtasia software. TechSmith says it is trying to resolve the issue.
